What is IVF?
In vitro fertilization (IVF) is the process where an egg is fertilized with sperm outside the body and the resulting embryo is transferred to the mother's uterus. It is one of the most effective treatment methods for couples unable to conceive.
Treatment Stages
- Ovarian Stimulation: Egg development is induced with hormone medications.
- Egg Retrieval: Mature eggs are collected under mild anesthesia.
- Fertilization: Eggs are combined with sperm in the laboratory.
- Embryo Development: Fertilized eggs are monitored for 3-5 days.
- Embryo Transfer: High-quality embryos are transferred to the uterus.
Success Rates
Pregnancy rates are approximately 28% with single embryo transfer and around 46% with double embryo transfer. Live birth rates generally range between 30-35%. Success depends on age, ovarian reserve and treatment protocol.
